This photograph was taken 23rd June in Karakol village at a friend’s wedding. Altai wedding rituals are fascinating. This photograph illustrates just one part of a single ritual in which the bride is accompanied from a relative’s house to the ail of the bridegroom’s parents. Whilst transitioning from one home to another she is particularly vulnerable and so is protected from dark spirits by a white sheet, tied to two birch branches and carried by relatives for her to walk behind unseen. Here, the bride sits in the ail of her parents in law waiting for the sheet to be raised by the bridegroom’s uncle. I wonder what she must feel at this moment as the rays of light greet her at the beginning of a new journey. I thought it might inspire anyone about to undertake a distant journey this summer with hope, anticipation and resolve.
