Sacred Natural Sites
Conserving Nature & Culture
Article on Altai ethno-cultural nature park ‘Uch Enmek’ by Dobson & Mamyev
Published by Earthscan, ‘Sacred Natural Sites’ was initiated by the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature). The book is available on Amazon and includes a chapter co-authored by Joanna Dobson & Danil Mamyev on issues faced by the ‘Uch Enmek’ Indigenous Nature Park, Ongudai Region, Altai Republic. The IUCN is encouraging research into what constitutes a sacred natural territory; how the role of culture effects not only biodiversity conservation but also the preservation of an area’s ‘sacred characteristics’; and how such territories can be managed as specially protected sacred natural sites. The article contributed concerning ‘Uch Enmek’ in Altai has been edited many times over the 2 year period of preparation for publication and is some way from the original texts prepared by Dobson & Mamyev, but nonetheless it contributes towards the aim of representing sacred lands in Altai within the international community concerned with issues of land and culture.
